When Andrew Brons had to cancel a planned appearance at a Pendle BNP meeting last night, his parliamentary assistants Chris Beverley and Adam Walker stepped in to represent Andrew in his absence.

The following is an example of a response given to such a student, who has contacted this office asking for comments regarding the Lisbon Treaty, and asked; “I understand one of the aims of the treaty was to increase transparency and make the EU more democratic. One of the means to do so was by increasing the role of the European Parliament. I was therefore wondering whether you feel that as an MEP you are now more able to influence decisions? How does the co-decision procedure with the Commission work in practise?
Durham Students stand up for free speech

Following the disgraceful decision to cancel the debate planned for this Friday featuring Andrew Brons MEP and his PA and Office Manager Cllr Chris Beverley, students at the university arranged a demonstration to show their opposition to this disgraceful move and their support for free speech.

I decided, reluctantly, to abstain on the Resolution (as a whole) on human rights violations in China. I supported much of the resolution including:
the call for the release of political prisoners and sympathy with those criticising the detentions;
