Autocratic liberalism is intolerant of dissent

ANDREW BRONS MEP has written to the editors of every newspaper in his Yorkshire and North East Lincolnshire constituency over the Pope’s comments with regard to the Equality Bill’s promotion of homosexuality.
This was his letter:
“The Pope was, of course, quite right to have criticised the misnamed Equality Bill because it would, “impose unjust limitation on the freedom of religious communities to act in accordance with their beliefs”.
“It was an example of liberalism being tolerant of all beliefs provided only that they have liberalism at their core. The current Pope has previously referred to an autocratic liberalism that is intolerant of dissent.
However, the same criticism could be made of the Equality & Human Rights Commission’s taxpayer-funded assault on the British National Party, firstly on account of its membership criteria and now because of the wording of its statement of principles.
The British National Party might not be everybody’s favourite political party but nor might the Roman Catholic Church be everybody’s favourite religious denomination. However, that is not the point. There is no virtue in protesting only when religious or political views, with which one agrees, are under threat.
It is ironic that that we currently have laws that seek to prevent discrimination on the ground of religion or philosophical belief.
