We must have a genuinely neutral policy on the Middle East

This was my contribution this afternoon to a debate on recent developments in counter-terrorism policies in the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) Committee.
“It seems to be thought by the United States and the United Kingdom Governments that the answer to Islamic terrorism is military action in Muslim countries. This is not a cure but an aggravating factor. It radicalises Muslims in the country of the military action and in the country carrying out the military action.
Our troops would be better employed in their home countries, protecting citizens and infrastructure than by putting our troops up as targets to be killed.
The use of so-called ‘clean skins’ is a problem, so it does mean that the innocent, as well as the guilty, from the communities from which the terrorists come, must be kept under surveillance – benign but targeted surveillance.
Finally we must have a genuinely neutral policy on the Middle East and distance ourselves from the partisan policy of the United States.
